How To Get a Professional Photograph for Your Newsletter

1000038Brian Tracy says "Everything counts in selling" and you are making an impression from the beginning (he also notes, "You only get one chance to make a good first impression"...  As your newsletter may be the first and likely most remembered impression you make until you sit down with a prospects, don't use a bad picture!

Do not start with a picture that your aunt took of you at the pool with her 1999 cell phone!  Invest in a good professional photograph that presents you as the professional you are and reinforces your brand image.

For the newsletter, you will find that a .jpg or .png file will give you the best results and knowing a few things in advance about what to do to get the best results will make your photo appear crisp and business-like.

How Big? How To?

What size photo do I need for the Newsletter?

  • Max Height: 140px;
  • Max Width up to 140px;
  • Resolution: 96dpi
    (96 dip is all you need, don't use print image files that may be 300 dpi.)
  • Maximum size: 25Kb.
  • Need a super easy to use photo editor? Use PIXLR, it's online, free and it's powerful online editor that will automatically output your image in the correct format and resolution.

TIPS FOR GETTING THE BEST RESULTS

  • Start with a digital image of top quality - go to a studio and get a professionally posed and lighted photograph (Sears offers a great service for about $65 that is hard to beat for convenience and value.)
  • Re size the photo before you upload it to a maximum of 140 pixels wide by 100 pixels high (make your photo 140 pixels high to take advantage of the largest image possible).
  • Use a photo editing program like Photoshop if you know how, Corel, or Microsoft Picture Editor to re-size and sharpen your photo. (if you leave it up to the newsletter software, it will re size your photo but frankly, the software is relatively dumb. It probably won't do it as well as a you can.)
  • Set your photo to save at 96dpi.  That's all a monitor is going to display anyway.

USE A PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY STUDIO AND LET THEM DO THE WORK

You will find you can get a very good professional image for around $70 USD from stores like Walmart or Sears. Many have a photo studio set up in store and you'll come away with a good image. If you want, you can always go to a professional portrait studio and get a very high quality image but it'll usually cost a lot more.
